The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) reports that according to new data from the Regional Plan Association, New York City’s housing shortage could reach 1.2 million homes due to sea level rise and NYC’s tall buildings being at risk. As flood-prone lands become increasingly unbuildable, the report highlights that more than half of the 82,000 homes in Long Island are in danger, with additional vulnerabilities found in parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and cities along the Long Island Sound.

In 2023, CTBUH conducted a global study on sea level rise and NYC’s tall buildings, analyzing 23,156 buildings either completed or under construction within 100 kilometers of coastlines. Since January 1, 2022, the focus has shifted to buildings taller than 200 meters. The findings revealed that 70% of the 2,005 tall buildings, or 1,399 structures, are located within 100 kilometers of the shore, exposing them to severe threats from sea level rise and NYC’s tall buildings issues.

These findings underscore that sea level rise and NYC’s tall buildings are not only an environmental hazard but also a significant challenge for urban infrastructure and housing policies in New York’s future.
