A blind man fell into an elevator shaft in Los Angeles
Yesterday, Los Angeles news agencies reported that a blind man fell into the elevator shaft; But luckily he survived and is now being cared for in the hospital. According to CCTV footage, the elevator door was open on the fourth floor, but there was no cabin on that floor, and when the blind man tried to enter the elevator, he fell into the well. A worker who was working nearby saw this scene and immediately went to help him.
Tommy Davis has lived in this building for 12 years. He says: “The conditions of the building are not favorable at all, and this accident occurred due to the unfavorable conditions and the lack of guide barriers.”
This building belongs to Michael Weinstein. He also has several other buildings that are for low-income people. According to a recent report by the LA Times, complaints about the building’s lack of health and safety enforcement are high.
The cost of renovating the Madison building
In a statement, the building’s owner claimed that since 2018, it has spent more than $6 million to renovate the Madison building and $600,000 to repair and renovate the elevator.
Jonathan M. Eisenberg said, “The Los Angeles Times and other media outlets have repeatedly held AHF responsible for problems in the Madison building, particularly its elevator outages. This case proves that AHF knew from the beginning that the building’s elevator had a problem, but did not take any action to repair it.”
Davis tried several times to report the problems to different news outlets because he says if the problems were made public, they might be addressed sooner. The last time he asked FOX 11 news agency to come to the building to record the report was last Thursday, unfortunately the guards did not allow the reporters to enter.
