According to Cabin News, citing Kyodo News, the Tokyo escalator incident led to the death of an elderly woman. The 80-year-old woman died on June 12 when her neck got stuck between the bottom of the escalator railing and the floor.
Security footage from a supermarket in the Nishitokyo district of western Tokyo shows the woman suddenly falling down an escalator while trying to lift the walker she was using.
While expressing his condolences, the supermarket seller said that he will fully cooperate with the police to complete the case. From 2010 to May 2023, 54 escalator-related incidents — some involving serious injury or death — were reported by municipal officials.
The police and related authorities are investigating the cause of the Tokyo escalator accident and finding solutions to prevent other incidents.
